The "Christmas Stocking Project" was first formed in 1983 and since then it has grown to be an annual time of making, filling and giving out Christmas stockings to children of inmates who are imprisoned and jailed in both states: Kentucky and southern Indiana. Over 80 churches and organizations - that include different denominations - are involved. We come together to serve a common goal (see our ministry links page!). In 2007, we supplied stockings to 52 facilities which included prisons, jails & youth centers – with more facilities being added each year. The need for this is absolutely tremendous!!

Christmas holiday visits from a child to a parent in prison or jail can be a very traumatic experience. The Christmas stocking gift helps to make that time a little brighter and help to ease the tension. In addition, the stocking may be the only gift some children receive. It is often said of some chaplains that the Christmas stocking project is a tremendous blessing to all concerned - the inmates, the families, the children, and even to the chaplains themselves - and is known statewide throughout the prison system.

The content of the Christmas stocking include a Book of John, a Christian comic book, a coloring book, crayons, comb, a small toy, candy bar, several pieces of wrapped candy, candy cane, snack crackers, bag of chips, and any other permissible item that we are able to obtain. New items are added each year. We also want to include toboggans and mittens in as many stockings as possible – plus an additional toy and a bible.

This year, our goal is to provide 10,000 stockings. If you feel led by the Lord to help in this ministry, we welcome your response. All money donations are totally tax deductible and are used to purchase items for the Christmas stocking. You will receive a Thank You letter on our letterhead with the amount given. Checks should be made payable to "The Christmas Stocking Project".

You can be a part of this mission outreach by collecting small toys, candy bars, candy canes and bags of individually wrapped candy (you could have a candy bar Sunday at your church!), or by collecting money to purchase knit caps, mittens, pencils, small note pads, children’s books, snack crackers, pretzels, chips or Doritos, or by making stockings (finished stocking should be 18” long and 9” wide with 3 inch cuff – toe pointed to the right). Patterns are provided for the stockings, if needed. Contact: 502 -964-3304 ext. 1227.

All items should be received by the last week in November. Deliver or mail to: Evangel Prison Ministries, 5400 Minors Lane, Louisville, KY, 40259.

God bless you!
